As I was reading and reflecting on the post, I mentally fast forwarded into the future to imagine the changes that could be brought to bear on the politics of this country if even one of the two most well known techies, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were to enter politics. One such change that might come into being is in gaining and engaging the attention of the voting population. Imagine if they were to be vying for the office of President of the United States. Would either of them really need the support of either of the existing political parties or would they have the ability and the vision to start their own party?

In the past, attempts to start new parties have been thwarted by old line political and media gatekeepers, but imagine if an emerging party were able to capitalize on the most advanced aspects of the new media and the ability to enhance and even create those advanced aspects of these new media channels of communication.
I can only hope that the political debate that is taking place in America can produce some change. I kind of like the idea of a Gates - Jobs, presidential contest. I sincerely doubt that either of these gentlemen could stand the bickering and wrangling with Congress over issues that seem to be national in scope and importance and end-up being trivialized by the politicians. These two men have been raised in the environment of decisiveness and risk-taking. Congress will take few risks and will almost never make decisions without checking the direction of the wind! We debate gay marriage(certainly the hetero model hasn't proved to a great success); national health insurance has been endorsed by a majority of Americans. Senators and Congresspeople are ignoring this. The list goes on and on!
ReplyDeleteI have a proposal. First we reduce the number of senators to one from each state - shrinking the Senate to 50 members. To qualify, each senate candidate would have to pass the MCAS test. Next we limit the numer of Reps to a max of 5. The collective intelligence of a states population would be the principal factor in determining your Congressional delegation. This would put a value on education as a stepping stone to success and would reward states that spend money for education instead of border patrols and lotteries.
Finally, I am available for either job - a bloviating Congressperson or a sonorous Senator.
